Google, Facebook go retro in push to update 1986 privacy law

Nicole Ozer from the ACLU of Northern California, demonstrating what cell phones looked like in 1986.

WASHINGTON--For a few hours on Capitol Hill yesterday evening, it was October 1986 again, complete with legwarmers, an Apple IIc, pop rocks, Duran Duran, and cell phones the size of a cat.
The companies sponsoring this night of nostalgia include Google and Facebook, which are hoping to visibly highlight how out-of-date a law enacted 25 years ago today has become in an age of cloud computing, gigabit networks, and terabyte storage.
The law in question is the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act, a statute written in the pre-Internet era of telephone modems and the black-and-white Macintosh Plus. A coalition of groups, which include liberal, conservative, and libertarian non-profit organizations as well as companies, hope to convince the U.S. Congress to update the law to include location privacy and to protect documents stored on the Web through services like Google Docs, Flickr, and Picasa. (CNET was the first to report on the creation of this Digital Due Process coalition last year.)
Their not-so-subtle intent of yesterday's back-to-the-future blast: to woo congressional staff. That meant convening this privacy-law bacchanal, probably the first the nation's capital has ever experienced, a few blocks from the Senate and House offices at Top of the Hill on Pennsylvania Avenue, which describes itself as a "World War II-era lounge" featuring "an extensive wine, champagne and martini list."
The mood of the festivities received a last-minute boost when Sen. Patrick Leahy, the chairman of the Judiciary committee, announced he was planning a committee vote to revise the 1986 law by the end of the year.
"Today this law is significantly outdated and outpaced by rapid changes in technology and the changing mission of our law enforcement agencies after September 11," Leahy said. "At a time in our history when American consumers and businesses face threats to privacy like no time before, we must renew" our commitment to privacy.
ECPA is notoriously convoluted and difficult even for judges to follow. The groups hope to simplify the wording while requiring police to obtain a search warrant to access private communications and the locations of mobile devices--which is not always the case today.
Another argument for updating ECPA: Internet users currently enjoy more privacy rights if they store data locally, a legal hiccup that could slow the shift to cloud-based services unless it's changed.
Looming obstacles
There are, however, two obstacles looming directly in front of the Digital Due Process coalition. First, Leahy's proposal, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act Amendments Act of 2011, has no Republican support so far (in fact, it has no cosponsors at all).
That lack of visible Republican enthusiasm will make it difficult for the legislation to navigate its way through a bipartisan legislature. In June, Leahy told CNET that he hoped to gain GOP support: "I hope so," he said. "Otherwise we'll have a heck of a time passing it."
Second, the U.S. Justice Department has launched a concerted political attack on the principles behind the Digital Due Process coalition. James Baker, the associate deputy attorney general, said in April that rewriting ECPA to grant cloud computing users more privacy protections and to require court approval before tracking Americans' cell phones would hinder police investigations.
When asked yesterday if the Justice Department had a position on ECPA changes, a spokesman referred CNET to Baker's previous statements. Department officials have indicated they believe the law strikes a reasonable balance between privacy and law enforcement as currently written -- and would be unlikely to drop their opposition unless they get something like mandatory data retention as a sweetener.
Corporate members of the Digital Due Process coalition include Amazon.com, Apple, AT&T, eBay, IBM, Intel, Intuit, LinkedIn, Loopt, and Microsoft.
But it's the presence of conservative and libertarian groups in the coalition, including Americans for Tax Reform, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and Citizens Against Government Waste, that might sway more Republican votes. (Other non-profits include the Center for Democracy and Technology, the ACLU, and the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
"I think there's no reason why believers in the Constitution and limited government, which would include I hope all Republicans, wouldn't sign on to this," says Berin Szoka, president of TechFreedom, a free-market think tank that's a coalition member.
Szoka adds: "This is about the most basic values of America. The search warrant requirement is and always has been the crown jewel of America's civil liberties. I'm disappointed not to see more Republicans taking on this fight."
A related Senate location privacy proposal, introduced in June by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), was slightly weakened to attract Republican support. (Wyden's proposal addresses only location-tracking, including warrantless cell phone tracking, not cloud computing and the other principles embraced by the coalitionn.)
The final version of Wyden's bill deleted about nine pages of text that would have curbed foreign intelligence location collection. But it also gained a conservative Republican supporter in the form of Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah.
This week, Sen. Mark Kirk, an Illinois Republican, announced he was signing on to Wyden's bill.
"The technological advancements we've seen in the past 25 years have revolutionized the way we live our lives, but unfortunately surveillance protections have not kept pace," Kirk said. "It's time our digital privacy laws go Back to the Future for a sorely needed update.
Marc Rotenberg, director of the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which is not a member of the coalition, warns that the groups involved in the effort may be inadvertently savaging a law that's still quite valuable.
"Updating the law? Yes. Trashing the law? No. If you want to trash a law, trash the Patriot Act," Rotenberg says.
Rotenberg adds that he's worried the coalition members' strategy is based on "misunderstanding the law, trashing the law, and focusing only on government access," instead of expanding it to address what companies can do with data as well. The coalition's corporate members would, however, be unlikely to agree with additional regulations targeting Web companies.
The coalition has a Web petition, at NotWithoutAWarrant.com, and a Facebook page too.

Rainbow Eucalyptus ( Si pohon pelangi )

Lalu kenapa kulit kayu terlihat warna warni seperti pelangi?

Google exploring Yahoo buy?

Google is exploring the possibility of partnering to buy Yahoo, according to a report.
The search site and advertising purveyor has talked to at least two private-equity firms about helping them bankroll a deal to buy Yahoo's core business, says The Wall Street Journal, which cites "a person familiar with the matter."
The talks are early-stage, no formal proposal has been worked out, Google may not wind up pursuing the buy, and it's not clear which private equity firms are involved, the Journal said. Still, the idea of the currently reigning search giant buying the deposed search giant is intriguing, as is the possibility of two of the Web's biggest companies coming together--a possibility that, as the Journal notes, would no doubt pique the interest of antitrust regulators.
Despite a little good news in its third-quarter earnings results, Yahoo has been in a muddle lately, with a stagnant stock price, high employee attrition rate, and withering product development efforts. The company's board sacked CEO Carol Bartz last month and Yahoo has apparently been shopping itself around to potential buyers.
Reported suitors include the previously spurned Microsoft, venture capitalist Andreessen Horowitz, China-based e-commerce company Alibaba, and fellow Web 1.0 grandee AOL.
According to the Journal's sources, Google likes the idea of selling ads on Yahoo's Web sites.

iPod at 10: A game changer getting long in the tooth

On October 23, 2001, Apple took a big step in its corporate renaissance with a little device that stored all of 1,000 songs, cost an eyebrow-raising $399, and had more than a few critics chuckling at Steve Jobs' expense.
Jobs even seemed to anticipate that skepticism when he introduced the first iPod at a private event in the company's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. In classic form, he saved the big reveal until the very end of the presentation, pulling out the iPod like a magician showing off the correct card pulled out from a shuffled deck.
"Why music? Well, we love music, and it's always good to do something you love," Jobs said. "More importantly, music's a part of everyone's life. Everyone. Music's been around forever, it will always be around. This is not a speculative market. And because it's a part of everyone's life, it's a very large target market all around the world. It knows no boundaries."
He was right. Customers snapped up more than 125,000 iPods in the first two months it was on sale. Sales continued to grow, more than quintupling in some cases, peaking when Apple proceeded to run through four consecutive years of people buying more than 50 million iPods.
That same ecosystem was bolstered by the simultaneous growth of Apple's iTunes software, an integral part of the iPod sales machine and Apple's hardware and software combination. All told, Apple has now sold more than 320 million iPods since launching it a decade ago, as well as increasing its lineup to multiple form factors, colors and capacities.
(Credit: Source: Apple quarterly earnings)
The music-centric event would go on to become an annual tradition, marking a turning point for Apple. It was expanding beyond computers and computer accessories to something people could use when away from those devices, while luring them into Apple's ecosystem.
But it's no secret the bloom is off the rose with Apple's landmark music player. Despite selling a seemingly healthy 42.6 million units of the device in its most recent fiscal year, which wrapped up last month, iPod sales have been on the decline, due in no small part to cannibalization. Apple effectively built the entirety of why you'd ever want an iPod--and then some--into the iPhone, the same gadget that's now pulling in the bulk of Apple's business.
Apple has also shifted its development focus onto those newer devices, giving the iPod line only marginal improvements every few years. In fact, during the past several cycles, the company's seemed almost at a loss at what to do with some of its iPod models, choosing to shift colors and pricing, versus making the kind of dramatic overhauls it now saves for its other portables.
A brief history
When the iPod was introduced, it was like nothing the industry had ever seen. It was a cross between the early crop of diminutive flash-based MP3 players that sported a relatively small amount of on-board storage, and the much larger, hard drive-based players that had gigabytes of storage, but came in sizes that more closely resembled CD players. By comparison, the first iPod came in about the size of a deck of cards, while still managing to have a hard drive inside. It also had an unusual exterior of chrome and translucent white plastic, with what would become iconic white headphones bundled in.
The device was married to two pieces of Apple technology: one software and one hardware. On the software side, Apple made use of its burgeoning iTunes software, giving buyers a way to sync over music they had ripped to their computers. On the hardware side, there was FireWire, Apple's high-speed data plug, which gave Apple an edge on competitors with a single cable that could sync and charge the device at the same time. Of course now it's easy to look back at both things and think about it as obvious, but at the time it was unique and attractive.
a Apple continued to improve the iPod, lowering prices, shrinking its size while increasing the built-in storage, adding compatibility (and later replacing Firewire) with USB 2.0, and extending battery life. That went on for another three years before Apple decided to fork the line, adding the iPod Mini. The Mini held less storage than the original iPod but came in at a dramatically smaller size, with multiple colors and a lower price than its older sibling. It was a success from the get go, quickly becoming Apple's best seller.
In 2005, Apple added to the iPod line once again with the Shuffle. Making use of flash memory for the first time in an iPod, the no-screen Shuffle became Apple's entry-level model, offering a design that could be worn around a listener's neck and that would double as a USB drive. Apple followed that up later in the same year by killing off the Mini with the iPod Nano, a tiny flash memory-based iPod with a color screen that made the Mini seem chubby by comparison.
Over the next two years, Apple hit repeat on its iPod playlist, refreshing units with new features and continuing to add to its iTunes software and iTunes Music Store. The biggest change to the line didn't come until the introduction of the iPhone, which was Apple's first touch-screen iPod. With the iPhone, the iPod software came in the form of an app that iPhone users could launch, something that would follow as a separate piece of hardware three months later with the introduction of the iPod Touch, a device that's essentially an iPhone without the phone components. Apple then overhauled its entire iPod line, touting the iPod Touch as the biggest and best iPod (just short of the iPhone, which could obviously do a bit more), relegating the old click wheel iPod to be called the "classic."
An uncertain future
Even with declining sales and relevance, Apple's shown few signs of abandoning the iPod, or reducing its line. In fact, Apple's never cut an iPod model since the product launched--at least not without replacing it with a newer design. One could argue that's what will likely happen to the Classic in place of the more popular Touch, but it hasn't yet.
But Apple's a company that famously kills off things in the name of progress. It did it with the floppy drive, and is in the process of that once again with optical drives and hard disk drives on the MacBook Air. One can look at the current iPod line over the past few years and see that what's exciting is everything at the very top, which once again is more like the iPhone.

Yet even with its less than historically impressive sales numbers, and a feature stall, the iPod continues to drive people into the company's product ecosystem. At Apple's iPhone 4S introduction earlier this month, CEO Tim Cook alluded to as much, saying that "nearly" half of new iPod sales were going to people buying their first iPod. A similar number that gets thrown around by the company is that about half of people buying a Mac these days are first timers as well.
No doubt there will be a day when the iPod as we know it will cease to exist. But even then we'll still be able to look back on it as the product that helped build the foundation for the devices we have now, and the ones we haven't seen yet--a value that's harder to quantify than sales numbers alone.

Verizon's iPhone 4S vs. Android?

It was only a few years ago when Verizon Wireless customers complained they didn't have enough choices when it came to cool new phones. Now it looks Verizon is the place to be for the latest and greatest in smartphones.
But what's an average smartphone consumer to do? It seems like every week, Verizon is adding a new "flagship" device to its offering. While Verizon representatives say they are simply trying to offer customers more choice, they're also creating some confusion. In this Friday's Ask Maggie, I help one reader get a handle on what Verizon has to offer.
I also offer some advice on whether I think it's wise for Google Android customers to wait for the new Ice Cream Sandwich update to Android or not.
Ask Maggie is an advice column that answers readers' wireless and broadband questions. The column now appears twice a week on CNET offering readers a double dosage of Ask Maggie's advice. If you have a question, I'd love to hear from you. Please send me an e-mail at maggie dot reardon at cbs dot com. And please put "Ask Maggie" in the subject header. You can also follow me on Facebook on my Ask Maggie page.

Decisions, decisions

Dear Maggie,
I'm a Verizon Wireless customer and I'm looking to upgrade my phone. I've been a long time BlackBerry user for years, but I'm so done with BlackBerry. And I'm ready for a much cooler smartphone. I don't have an allegiance to Apple or Google, so I need some advice on what to get. I'm leaning toward an iPhone, but I'm wondering if there are some cool Android phones I should consider. Can you help me decide?
Thanks,
Undecided
Dear Undecided,
It was only a few years ago that Verizon Wireless customers were singing the blues because the carrier didn't have any cool new phones. As a CDMA carrier, it wasn't always first on the list to get the latest and greatest devices. But since the original Motorola Droid and Verizon's big push into 4G LTE, the carrier is on top when it comes to getting the hottest phones on the market.
As a BlackBerry user looking for a richer smartphone experience, I'd say that whether you go Android or iOS, you'll likely be happy either way. Since you seem open to either Android Apple, I've put together a quick cheat sheet including some of the new phones that Verizon already offers and will soon offer. By no means is this comprehensive list or assessment of every phone that Verizon has to offer. But it will give you an idea of what's out there and what will likely be coming soon.
Apple iPhone 4S
While some people were disappointed that the new iPhone 4S didn't have a new design and lacked some expected features, like near field communications (NFC) and LTE, my guess is it's still going to be the hottest phone on the market. Apple already said that it sold four million devices in the first weekend. There are still plenty of features that makes this version of the iPhone 4S an improvement over the iPhone 4. In addition to a faster process and better camera, the iPhone 4S also has the latest iOS 5 software running on it. Some of the cool features included in this release are iMessage, which lets you chat with other iOS device users just like you could with BlackBerry's BBM. There's also an improved alert and easier editing of photos, just to name a few.
But the most important new feature on the iPhone 4S is Siri, the personal assistant app. This intelligent speech recognition app allows you to tell your phone what you need and Siri can find it for you or do it for you. For example, Siri can help find a nearby sushi restaurant or it knows to remind you to call your mother when you home from work. Unfortunately, it can't pick up your dry-cleaning. That task still requires a real-life personal assistant. Darn!
Pros: Dual core processor, 8 megapixel camera, Siri
Cons: No 4G LTE (3G only)
Release date: October 14
Price: 16GB $199; 32GB $299; 64GB $399
Motorola Droid Bionic
Until this week, the Motorola Droid Bionic was the flagship Google Android phone for Verizon. It is the first 4G LTE device that also has a dual-core processor on Verizon's network. But the Droid Bionic's time as top dog on Verizon's network will be short-lived. This week Motorola announced yet another 4G LTE Android device, the Droid Razr. And Samsung announced the Galaxy Nexus, the first phone to sport the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. It seems strange that Motorola would release two high-end devices exclusively on the same carrier within just a couple of months. But Alain Mutricy, senior vice president of product and portfolio management at Motorola, said the company is innovating so quickly that it needs to push out new devices as soon as it can.

Indeed, part of the Droid Bionic's problem is that it is months late. The phone was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. But after delays, it didn't hit store shelves until last month. This gives the Droid Bionic, which is a fine phone, a short window of availability before newer devices, such as the Motorola Droid Razr and the Samsung Nexus Galaxy hit the market.
Pros: 4G LTE, dual core processor
Cons: Doesn't run the latest Android OS
Release date: September 2011
Price: $299.99
Samsung Stratosphere
The Samsung Stratosphere is part of Samsung's flagship Galaxy S II line of Android smartphones. The original Galaxy devices have been a tremendous hit for Samsung. And this next generation of devices is also expected to sell well. The big benefit of this phone is that it's the only 4G LTE phone from Verizon with an actual QWERTY keyboard. So if you are nervous about giving up the physical keypad of the BlackBerry, this might be the phone for you. But just keep in mind that some of its features are not as advanced as some of the other Android devices on Verizon's network. For example, it doesn't have a dual core processor. The camera is not quite as good as the others. And it's not running the very latest Google Android software. But it's a fine phone. And at $149.99, it's also half the price of some of the other 4G LTE phones offered by Verizon. Pros: 4G LTE, QWERTY keyboard, relatively inexpensive
Cons: Doesn't support the latest Android OS, single core processor, 5 megapixel camera
Release date: October 16, 2011
Price: $149.99 (after a $50 mail-in rebate)
Motorola Droid Razr
Thin is in. And that in a nutshell is what makes the Motorola Droid Razr cool. It's the thinnest smartphone on the market. And the fact that Motorola managed to also put 4G LTE capability into such a slim package is impressive. If you're looking for a phone that won't weigh you down and fits easily into your pocket, this is a good choice. Like the iPhone 4S and other top Android phones at Verizon it has an 8-megapixel rear camera with 1080p HD video capture and image stabilization, as well as a front-facing HD camera for video chat. The biggest downside of this phone is that it uses the slightly older version of Android, 2.3.5 Gingerbread. This may not necessarily be a deal breaker, considering that Alain Mutricy, senior vice president of product and portfolio management at Motorola told me at the Droid Razr's coming out party in New York City this week, that it will likely get the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS in the first part of 2012.
Pros: Super thin 7.1mm (0.28 inch); dual-core processor
Cons: Doesn't support the latest version of Android OS
Release date: November
Price: $299.99
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
The Samsung Galaxy Nexus hasn't been officially announced for Verizon Wireless. But it's expected that Verizon will be the first U.S. carrier to sell the phone. And it could end up on other U.S. carrier networks later. The biggest selling point of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is it will be the first phone to support the new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS. While it's not as thin and lightweight as the Droid Razr, the Galaxy Nexus is still pretty thin at 8.9 mm (0.35-inch) thick. And like the previous version of the Nexus device, the Galaxy Nexus has an NFC or near field communications chip embedded, which means you can use Google Wallet to tap and pay for things. Pros: 4G LTE, NFC chip, dual-core processor, latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.
Cons: 5 megapixel camera

Release date:Not announced yet
Price:Not announced yet
So which smartphone is right for you? That's a tough question to answer. You said you were leaning toward the iPhone 4S. And that's a fine choice. Apple's iOS software makes using the iPhone very easy. And if you're already an Apple iTunes user, it's simple to integrate the iPhone 4S into your life. But keep in mind, that it will only operate on Verizon's slower 3G network. All the other Android devices I've listed for you will support the faster 4G LTE network. Some people have complained about battery life issues on some 4G LTE devices, so this might also be a concern for you. But barring that issue, the network speeds are much faster on these devices than other 3G smartphones, including the iPhone 4S.
To help you make your decision, I asked my CNET colleagues for their opinions as well. CNET Reviews editors, Bonnie Cha, Jessica Dolcourt and Nicole Lee chimed in, as did CNET News senior writer Roger Cheng. While most agreed the iPhone 4S is a good choice for a smartphone, they all also agreed that if you're going to go for an Android phone, you should wait for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
As Jessica Dolcourt put it, "I like the Droid Razr, and I personally wouldn't be surprised if in many ways the hardware is more exciting. However, Ice Cream Sandwich is the Galaxy Nexus ace in the hole and there's just no question that it will be the most powerful Android phone on the market when it comes out."
Roger Cheng, who has been a long time BlackBerry user and has also dabbled with a few Android phones, just recently bought the new iPhone 4S. He said that if simplicity is what you're looking for, then go with the Apple iPhone 4S. But if Android and all the fancy hardware specs strikes your fancy, go with the Nexus Galaxy.
"If I bought the Droid Bionic now, what would I be missing with Ice Cream Sandwich just few weeks later?" he said.
Of course, all of the new Android phones sporting Gingerbread today will likely get upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich in the first half of 2012. But given how long it has taken some manufacturers to update some phones, it's hard to predict exactly when the update will be pushed to these devices.
I hope this helps. And good luck!

Should I care about Ice Cream Sandwich?

Dear Maggie,
I keep hearing so much about the new Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich update. I'm thinking of getting one of the new Android smartphones. But what I'd like to know is if it's really worth it to wait to buy one with the new Ice Cream Sandwich software. I know there are a lot of new features, but should I really care about these features? And which ones do you think are the most important?
Thanks,
Greybeard1156
Dear Greybeard1156,
The new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich version is a major upgrade to Android. It's supposed to unite the software that Google has developed for tablets with the software for smartphones. And because of this change, it has completely changed the look and feel of the user interface.
There are tons of new features that have been added to the Android OS as part of this update. And CNET has already written several stories outlining some of these new features. But I think you aren't just asking for a list of new features, you want to know why you should care about this update.
Indeed, that's a good question to ask. The pace of innovation in the smartphone market is increasing. Manufacturers are churning out new devices and software developers, such as Google, are coming out with new versions of their platforms. All of this can make average users feel like they're on a constant upgrade treadmill.
It's not essential that you buy a phone with the latest and greatest software, but the truth is that with each new level of innovation, Google seems to be making the Android platform easier to use. It's not just the cool new features that are added, such as the facial recognition feature that allows you to lock and unlock your phone using a snapshot of your face. But it's also the small things, such as the ability to disable pre-installed apps that you don't want to use, that makes the device simply easier to use.
While software is important, I don't think that's the only reason to buy a certain Android phone. I'd recommend buying the phone that fits your needs the best. Currently, only one device, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, has been announced with Ice Cream Sandwich pre-installed. But other phones will be getting it as well. And I expect that the high-end Android devices that are coming on the market right now with the Gingerbread version of Android will be upgradeable to Ice Cream Sandwich sometime in the first half of 2012.
So which features of Ice Cream Sandwich do I think are the most worthwhile? First let me start by saying, there are tons of new enhancements to Android with this updated version of the OS. But here's a list of the top 5 features that I think are the most important:
Facial recognition: This feature allows you to secure your phone by taking a picture of your face. And then your phone uses that picture to identify you when you try to log into your phone. When you try to unlock your phone, it compares your face to your picture to identify you.
Improved Web browser: The new Ice Cream Sandwich OS has simplified Web browsing by allowing users to open tabs and add bookmarks. Users can swipe across the tab to close it, much like users could do with Palm's WebOS.
Improved camera software: The new software has a"zero shutter lag" feature, which means you can take one picture after another very quickly. And there are also a lot of new photo-editing tools build into the camera app. The software also allows you to capture snapshots while you're recording video. And the panoramic feature allows you to pan your camera across a wide area, and then the software puts the photo together in one long panoramic view.
Data usage monitoring: This feature lets you track and monitor your data usage by app. And it warns you or can even cut you off from using data when you hit a predefined level.
Disable pre-installed apps: Now Android users can easily get rid of apps that they don't use and don't want on their phones.

Tembok Besar China Terancam Roboh

Minggu, 23 Oktober 2011, 05:46 WIB

Tembok China (www.mybeijingchina.com)

(art)

John Taylor says Gold to Top $1,800 by November

John Taylor, the famous manager of the world’s largest hedge fund, FX Concepts, has come out with his recent view for gold and currencies.
Taylor believes the markets are ready for another risk rally into November which will ultimately fall off sharply. Through this rally, gold prices may reach $1,800/oz again, according to Taylor which should coincide with risk currencies rallying as well. Taylor’s views align with some other major traders as a recent Bloomberg survey indicated that 22 out of 25 traders are bullish on the metal at present. In addition central bank and fund buying is likely to ensue as prices have fallen recently, an event predicted by famed trader Marc Faber. As late November approaches, however, Taylor and his firm see the next of leg of an economic downtrend emerging and gold will not be unscathed in his view. Taylor explains in his recent weekly market insight report,
“…excessive debt built up during the good times must be paid back, investors are forced to sell assets and drive down financial markets. The liquidation even hits ‘safe’ investments like gold.”
The metal could fall as low as $1,000-$1,200 an ounce, by the end of the first quarter of 2012, according Taylor who then advocates buying the metal with both hands. If the metal drops,
“I think it’s probably a big buy… There’s nothing to stop it from going up. Monetary systems are grotesquely screwed up, especially in Europe and also in the U.S. There’s going to be an awful lot of confusion going on for the next decade.”
Taylor says.
Gold prices are down more than -1% today, holding steadily above $1,600 per ounce however. The metal hit a high of $1,921/oz last month before dipping back sharply to $1,532/oz where it entered a major support range:

Japanese Yen (JPY) Making New All-Time Highs!

Out of nowhere this morning, the Japanese Yen strengthened vs. USD and made a new all-time high at 75.82, breaking what many consider to have been the “line in the sand”  at 76.  Take a look at the chart below.  You can see that the pair had been trading in a narrow range for some time.  This brings up two very important issues, the first being what caused this move.  The second question is what, if anything, will Japan do about it.
To answer the first question, I am hearing rumors that the move occurred on US dollar weakness as there may be a much larger particpation of the US in the Euro debt bailout through the IMF.  If the US just prints more money to give to Europe, that would weaken USD considerably.
But will there be a response by the Bank of Japan?  The BOJ has been known to intervene in the currency to weaken Yen to support exports, but they have been loathe to do anything in the face of the Euro debt crisis.  They could experience massive losses if there is no resolution.  My hunch is that they will wait until next week to see what happens, and then we could see some intervention at that time.
They just announced a plan to help exporters get some currency relief, but this measure is seen as temporary and not affecting the overall value of the Yen.  If the problems in the EU are not resolved quickly, then we could see further Yen strength on the risk aversion play.

Antivirus Microsoft Tandai Google Chrome Sebagai Virus

Melalui situs resminya, Microsoft meminta maaf.

http://thechive.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/cat-saturday-22.jpg?w=500

Jadi jangan heran bila kucing anda selalu menjilati tubuhnya setelah anda peluk.
6. Memberi kado hasil buruan
Quote:

Bonus :
Kittler (Reinkarnasi Hittler)

Spoiler for pesan:

Quote:
